"Somatic Syntax" was developed by Judith DeLozier and Robert Dilts in 1993 as a way to further deepen and expand the ‘mind-body’ connection and better understand and utilize physiology and “body language.” The study of Somatic Syntax will help you to mobilize and benefit from the wisdom of your body. Fundamental principles of Somatic Syntax are: The body speaks a language that is as refined, systematic, and complete as your verbal language; The body is in constant communication with your conscious mind, particularly in regard to issues of health, emotional well-being and safety; The body is infinitely wise, and intelligent; The body stores information, knowledge, and memories in the muscle and connective tissue. A key inspiration for the development of Somatic Syntax comes from Noam Chomsky’s theories of transformational grammar- The study of how sensory and emotional experiences (deep structures) come to be expressed through verbal language (surface structures). In other words, the study of how your cognitive mind interprets, conceives and verbally communicates the language of your body. Somatic Syntax essentially uses the posture, breath, and movements of the body to strengthen, integrate and generalize deep level resources. By exploring how the body organizes, moves and breathes when engaged in a particular state, we can learn to better express and manifest life affirming states in an ever greater variety of situations. In this way, Somatic Syntax helps to deepen our understanding and ability to utilize knowledge by bringing it more “into the muscle.”
